If you live in a cold, dry area, you probably have a humidifier that’s been sitting in your closet all summer, waiting to be used during the cold winter months. Before you drag it out to use it again, take a look at this article.
Did you know that using a humidifier is a smart investment for your indoor air quality and health during those months? But, if it’s not cleaned regularly, it could be harming you and your family.
Humidifiers are a good way to prevent airborne illnesses, dry skin, and other cold weather problems. Before you use it again, you should disinfect and clean it thoroughly and here’s why.
So it works
This may seem unnecessary to mention, but when your unit doesn’t turn on, it just might be dirty. Keeping your humidifier clean ensures it works every time you need it, and mold and other gross things don’t build up.
Your health
A dirty humidifier can spread bacteria and mold into the air you’re breathing for most of the day. The water will stagnate and release those gross water particles into the air. Not only should it be cleaned, but the water should be changed often as well; especially if you don’t use it all the time
The bacteria floating through the air can cause some health problems. Coughing, asthma attacks, fevers, anxiety, loss of appetite, etc. Most of these happen over long-term exposure to the bacteria-filled air.
All of this can be avoided if you take just a few minutes to clean with vinegar, bleach and a soft bristle brush once a week. Rinsing out the basin before every use will eliminate any bacteria from the standing water leftover.
